Nick’s Notes June 2016

Christian Aid: our thanks go to John (Phillips) for organising this year’s Christian Aid collection, to his team of collectors and to all who helped with the Hunger Lunch. It was a simple meal which included the lovely bread from the Fishpond Free House.

Her Most Gracious Majesty’s 90th Birthday Celebration: A reminder that there’s a joint United Benefice Service with Cromford Methodist Church at 10.30am on Sunday 12th June. There are food lists to sign up on at the back of both churches for the Bring & Share lunch to be held afterwards. Ladies are encouraged to wear hats and gentlemen a white or pink carnation. The Theme is “The Servant Queen and the King she Serves”. This is the title of the excellent booklet Her Majesty has       approved and it is available to buy either from Cornerstone Christian Bookshop or directly from the Bible Society. There are some printed invitations for you to take to give out at the back of both churches.

Prayer Chain: After many years of organising the Prayer Chain Tom and Margaret have decided to step down from this important role, we say thank you to them and also our thanks to Pauline (Key) who has agreed to replace them.

Ordinations: Please pray for all are to be Ordained at Derby Cathedral in the two services at the end of June. Especially for the Ordination to the Priesthood of Naomi Barraclough as a Pioneer Minister to Dave Battison on Saturday 25th, and also the Ordination of Lindsey Pearson as Deacon to Wirksworth Team Ministry on Sunday 26th June.

St. Mary’s and Holy Trinity PCC:  On Saturday 11th June both PCCs are meeting in Trinity Hall from 8.30am to 12.30pm for a half day of work on the MAP’s (Mission Action Plans) for both churches. As ever we   value your prayers as we meet to pray and work together.

Children’s Church and Youth Church:  Please see the item in these    Notices by Sue asking for assistance with the Children’s Church and Youth Church over the summer months. At the recent Church Prayer Meeting it was good to give thanks and pray for Children’s Church and Youth Church as well as for Christian Aid. There were lower numbers at the last meeting and we do encourage you to come to this. The next one is a Church Meeting which will be held on Wednesday 15th June, from 8.00pm in Trinity Hall.

Gift Aid: HT were able to claim over £11,671 and St. Mary’s £2,567 in Gift Aid. This tax refund  helps us lots. If you give to either or both churches and are a tax payer and don’t yet Gift Aid then please do speak to our efficient Treasurer David (Green).

“In or out!”: Sheila has sent an interesting link to a Christian view on the Forthcoming Referendum, please have a read and listen:

EU referendum – unsure how to approach this as a Christian?

Jim Memory, an expert in European mission and culture, spoke at a number of recent events on the subject. You can watch the talks at: http://www.redcliffe.ac.uk/event

Service of Thanksgiving: On Sunday 22nd May, instead of a Baptism for their daughter Iris, Alice and Redfern decided to have a Service of Thanksgiving. Though this service started at 11.00am (nearly!) St. Mary’s congregation invited them for 10.40am for tea and cakes. Thanks to those who baked including Irena from HT who treated us to some Polish goodies. We had a music group made up of Redfern, his friend Callum, Philip the organist and Nick on the double bass. This  family will be with us once again at the end of August for Iris’s Auntie Hannah and the then Uncle Terry’s wedding.

And finally:  the correct date for the HT AGM in next year is Sunday 2nd April. (Well done to those of you with eagle eyes who spotted the not so deliberate mistake in the May Notices, Caroline)

Every blessing

Nick
